Every day, Reach Out and Read-Alabama physicians see children for checkups starting at birth. Unfortunately, one in three of those children lives in a family that relies on $462 per week for their basic needs. This leaves little for important resources for their child’s language development, like books. Through our program, physicians “prescribe” a brand-new age and developmentally appropriate book and provide important information to the parents and caregivers about how to use that book every day to enhance brain development in their child. According to the National Institute for Early Education Research, it is long recognized that early literacy and language development plays a key role in enabling the kind of early learning experiences that are linked with academic achievement, reduced grade retention, higher graduation rates and enhanced productivity in adult life. In fact, all of the domains of a child's development —physical, social-emotional, cognitive, language and literacy—are interrelated and interdependent.
We need your help to continue and expand this highly effective program to all children and families across Alabama.
